ISO/IEC 17025 vs ISO 9001
Scope, technical competence, and why laboratories need 17025 — not just 9001.
The core difference
| Dimension | ISO 9001 | ISO/IEC 17025 |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Any organization | Testing & calibration labs |
| Technical competence | Not covered | Required (clauses 6–7) |
| Uncertainty & traceability | Not required | Mandatory (§7.6, §6.5) |
| Accreditation | Certification (optional) | Accreditation by NABL/A2LA/UKAS etc. |
Why labs need 17025
Customers and regulators that require accredited results reference ISO/IEC 17025:2017 specifically. A 9001 certificate signals good quality practice but does not prove your measurements are technically valid.

Frequently asked
Is 17025 harder than 9001? It builds on the same QMS philosophy but adds technical evidence (uncertainty, traceability, method validation) that 9001 omits.
