ISO for Laboratories: Which Standard Do You Actually Need?
For most testing and calibration labs the short answer is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 — but here is the nuance so you pick right the first time.
The three standards you will hear about
Search "ISO for laboratories" and you will keep running into three acronyms. They are not competitors — they cover different things.
| Standard | What it covers | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| ISO/IEC 17025:2017 | Technical competence for testing & calibration labs | Labs issuing test/calibration results to customers |
| ISO 9001 | General quality management system | Any organization wanting a QMS certificate |
| GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) | Conduct of non-clinical safety studies | Pharma, agrochemical, environmental study labs |
Which one is yours?
- Testing or calibration lab serving external customers → you almost certainly need ISO/IEC 17025. It is the only ISO standard built for your technical competence, and it is recognized through the ILAC network in 100+ economies.
- You only need a general QMS certificate → ISO 9001 may be enough — but note it does not cover technical competence, so laboratories are usually asked for 17025 on top.
- Non-clinical safety / efficacy studies (drug, crop, toxicology) → GLP, governed by the OECD Principles, not an accreditation like 17025.
- Internal manufacturing lab → 17025 if your results leave the company, otherwise 9001 often suffices.
Why ISO/IEC 17025 is the default
Unlike ISO 9001, 17025 was written specifically for labs: it adds technical requirements for method validation, measurement uncertainty, equipment calibration and traceability. That is exactly what your customers’ auditors and regulators look for. The current edition is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (third edition).
Accreditation bodies all assess the same 17025
"Accreditation" is what a national body grants against 17025. The standard is identical; the body and its region differ:
- NABL (India)
- CNAS (China)
- UKAS (United Kingdom)
- A2LA (United States)
- NATA (Australia & New Zealand)
- SINGLAS (Singapore)
